Layering necklaces

Layering necklaces is one of the best ways to have fun with your jewellery. It's all the rage and it's a trend that's here to stay.

You can build collections of chains and pendants based on gemstone colour, length and shape. The choices are infinitely variable and can change for the time of day or season of the year. Summer clothes with lower necklines is the ideal time to show off your collection.

Statement necklaces are usually better worn alone, but others can be skillfully mixed and matched. Usually pendants are the easiest to layer. Just experiment and play, it's a matter of personal taste after all!

The idea is to go for 2 or 3 (or even more!) necklaces at different lengths. Layer them one to two inches apart. You can also go for two or more short ones and a much longer piece for a more dramatic look.

You can choose a harmonious look (for instance all gold or silver tones) or a contrasting one, mixing metal colours, styles (abstract, figurative or symbolic) and finer with chunkier pieces.

You can hook the ends of the longest necklace to the one hanging above it, but do not hang dainty necklaces together, for fear of entangling them.
