Behind the gift

Our newest member, Sarah Goldwater, muses on the meaning and perceptions of gifts. Read on...

"It is a wonderful thing that we have the opportunity many times in the year to give a gift to one another.  Sometimes spontaneously, perhaps just to show our appreciation for someone and even sometimes just for ourselves, but of course for birthdays, anniversaries, Xmas etc.

Personally if ever my husband asks what I would like for Xmas, I invariably ask for a piece of jewellery.  My only directive being, earrings or a pendant etc…  He usually gets it right, leaving me feeling that behind each gift comes a hidden wave of kindness, generosity and love.

Interesting to see the sentiment that is hidden in each piece. Being a jewellery designer I am often shown people’s entire collections, ranging from their grandmother’s heirloom to their latest gift.  I myself have such priceless treasures.  A gold locket with my initials engraved on the back, a present from my parents when I was nine years old, a charm bracelet, also a gift when I was a child, still in my jewellery box, defying time.  A much missed ‘diamond’ eternity ring given to me by a boy in the road where I grew up when I was 6 years old, as an engagement ring and alas now sadly lost. These gifts mark a personal history and give us a tangible link to our past.

On my left hand I have my wedding ring set with diamonds, and on my wrist a watch, both of which I wear every day and subconsciously admire. They are gifts from my husband and of course I remember the day and the circumstances of receiving both of these. Such is the power of gift-giving when we get it right."
