February is for Amethyst

Amethyst a Timeless Gemstone.

Amethyst, a transparent variety of crystalline quartz, has captivated jewellery designers and wearers for centuries. Its distinctive violet hue, availability and spiritual associations have contributed to its enduring popularity.

Siberia and Brazil are known to produce some of the finest amethysts of deep purple colour with flashes of red and blue. Huge amethyst geodes have been found in Uruguay the largest being 20 feet in diameter. Amethysts are also found in Madagascar, Zambia and Tanzania, exhibiting differing shades of purple and are valued for their unique colouration.

In ancient Rome and Egypt, amethyst was favoured by prosperous merchants and powerful dignitaries. Its eye-catching colour not only suggested wealth but also made it an ideal medium for cameos and intaglios. Lapidarists preferred pale lilac amethysts for their ability to exhibit intricate details.

During the Middle Ages, amethyst adorned gold rings, brooches, earrings and buckles. Its popularity spread across Europe.  The Church also embraced amethyst, associating it with piety, humility and celibacy. Popes and Bishops often wore  massive gold rings set with this gemstone.

By the 16th century amethyst was believed to cure everything from drunkenness to nightmares.  Mary Queen of Scots wore an amethyst to dispel melancholia.  The Cheapside Hoard, a treasure trove of jewellery from the 17th century, includes pale amethysts known as "Rose de France".

Amethyst has been associated with love, spirituality and supernatural protection.  It is the birthstone for February and an emblem of the twelve apostles. Fine amethysts have graced religious and royal crown jewels.

Its healing properties are believed to relieve individuals from stress and strain, soothe irritability and balance mood swings.  It is purported to cleanse your aura, help you recover faster from illness, and balance all aspects of the self - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Whether set in rings, necklaces or earrings, amethyst's allure remains undiminished. Its versatility allows it to pair elegantly with silver, gold and platinum. From ancient times to modern designs, amethyst continues to enchant and inspire.
